DUNE WARS KIKI BALL

DUNE WARS KIKI BALL

FEB 2, 2024

Legendary OA Mother Posh Gvasalia x VVJ x PuSh Festival

On February 2, the cosmic forces of Van Vogue Jam and PuSh Festival converge for a showdown of galactic proportions: Dune Wars Kiki Ball. Hosted by the Kiki Legendary Overall Mother Posh Gvasalia, this astro-glam extravaganza celebrates the creativity and resilience of the QTBIPOC community through Ballroom—a culture founded by Black, Latinx, Queer and Trans folk in NYC, Harlem in the 60’s. The most fab children of Vancouver’s Ballroom scene will compete for cash prizes—and interstellar supremacy—across categories where space-age vogue, fashion and attitude bring the planets of Arrakis and Tatooine into alignment.

Walkers will storm the runway in extraterrestrial hair sculptures, metallic robot chic and sandworm couture, channeling influences from the iconic Houses of Ballroom all the way to the noble House Atreides. Witness Jedi vogue precision with lightsabers in hand, as they walk the line between Real and Bizzare, while Bene Gesserit sisters wield the Voice to deliver reads that echo through the galaxy.

In this climactic face-off, it’s do or do not. There is no try. Fear is the mind-killer and serving supreme Fremen furocity is their only hope. Will performers harness their artistry to restore balance to the universe or to assert celestial dominion? One thing is certain: as prophecies are fulfilled and legends unfold, it’s going to get spicy. May the shade be with you!

VVJ FAQ's

WHAT IS A BALL?

A BALL is an event that provides opportunities for a breadth of artists from the BALLROOM community to be seen, celebrated and supported, in the competitive BALL format. Individuals are given their “10’s” in order to move on to the battle rounds where competitors are paired into battles until there is a winner at the end of each category. The judges panel is specifically selected from the BALLROOM community. Balls are always accompanied by a COMMENTATOR and DJ for the event to flow.

WHAT IS BALLROOM?

Ballroom is a queer subculture and community founded in Harlem, NYC, by Black, Latinx, Queer and Trans folks - pioneered in the late 60’s by Crystal LaBeija.

WHERE DO I GO IF I'M WALKING A CATEGORY?

Info coming soon.

CAN I WALK A CATEGORY?

We ask all COMPETITORS to do their research/training before walking a category. The RUNWAY is a sacred and important space in BALLROOM. To walk a category without taking time to understand the history, intent, purpose, and category specific nuances is considered disrespectful.

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT VAN VOGUE JAM?

You can learn more about us at www.vanvoguejam.com

WHERE CAN I DONATE MONEY?

You can also donate money to us via our website www.vanvoguejam.com/donate

CAN WE TIP THE PEOPLE WALKING?

This is NOT a drag show, the best way to show your appreciation for the artists is to cheer them on and give them your presence and energy - if you really want to, you can talk to the artists after their category and personally to tip them. VIRGIN RUNWAY - 1 Trophy

I'm late; I'm late! For a VERY important date. Virgins, start this ball off right: come in a WHITE RABBIT effect that gives us wonderland in spades. Don't matter what time you show up; you gotta make it fashionable.

VIRGIN PERFORMANCE - 1 Trophy

In 3000 years, will they remember the time I missed that dip? Bring it in a SAND-colored effect to withstand the ravages of time, and give us a performance that kicks off your next era.

HANDS PERFORMANCE - 1 Trophy

Show us how precise your hands of time are with a fabulous CLOCK effect. Can your timepiece keep up? It must come with a printed reference photo.

BIZARRE - 1 Trophy

Infinity contains everything we know and then some! It winds far beyond concepts of time, space or even identity. Reach into the expanse of your mind and create a look that pulls out never-before-seen silhouettes and emotions. It must incorporate an ENDLESS LOOP in some fashion.

RUNWAY - 2 Trophies

(European Runway, All-American Runway)

They say a stitch in time saves nine, don't they? Let's see your handiwork in action. Prove that you know your garments inside and out by incorporating VISIBLE STITCHING, and/or PATCHWORK. Seal the deal with an accomplished walk and make this year your year in Runway.

REALNESS - 10 Trophies

(School Boy, Pretty Boy, Everyday, Thug, Executive, Transman, Butch, Fem Queen, Drags, Legendary)

If these are the days of our lives, then I'm bringing the drama tonight. Make a special guest appearance in a SOAP OPERA-inspired effect & glue us to the screen. It must come with a printed reference photo.

FACE - 4 Trophies

(Male Figure, Female Figure, GNC, Legendary)

This? This is the face of a classic in the making, and don't forget it. Replicate the effect of a HISTORIC BEAUTY and show us why your features should be remembered for years to come. It must come with a printed reference photo.

BEST DRESSED - 4 Trophies

(Male Figure, Female Figure, GNC, Legendary)

We would have nothing today without our Legends and Icons, especially our Pioneers and those who walked before such titles existed. Pay homage to a MEMORABLE EFFECT FROM BALLROOM'S ILLUSTRIOUS PAST. Make the look your own, but don't lose the polish that made it so special in the first place. It must come with a printed reference photo.

BODY - 4 Trophy

(Male Figure, Female Figure, GNC, Legendary)

Our timeline is so sensitive! The placement of some delicate wings could change the course of history forever. Bring the cause to this effect with BUTTERFLIES of any shape or size.

PERFORMANCE - 10 Trophies

(BQVF, FQ, RWT, Womens, Drags, Trans Man, Butch, GNC, Legends, Icons)

I am the future my ancestors fought for, and the future...is now. Ring in the dawn of a new age of voguing with a FUTURISTIC effect that'll make us check our calendars. Eat up the competition in your battles for a healthy New Year's bite.

POP, DIP, & SPIN - 1 Trophy

Old is gold. Pose your way through phrases of strength, precision, and symmetry to take us back to the old way, like it was yesterday. Tie it all together in a GOLD effect so we can't look away this time.

COMMENTATOR VS COMMENTATOR - 1 Trophy

Tick, tick, tick, we only have one minute to save the world. Make the alarm bells ring with a hot chant that incorporates an energized COUNT DOWN. Keep the effect simple and timeless.

CLUB KID FACE - 1 Trophy

Oh, you're saying my beat doesn't belong in a museum? Then I'll become the finest forgery there ever was! Reference an ARTISTIC MOVEMENT with an over-the-top use of makeup and create something new in the process. It must come with a printed reference photo.

SEX SIREN - 4 Trophies (Women, BQ, FQ, Transman)
*ADDED July 12th*

I wanna be on your calendar for every single week this year. Come simply & sexily with an effortless PINUP inspired effect, inspired by one of the months of the year. No references required

The judges panel is specifically selected from the BALLROOM community. Balls are always accompanied by a COMMENTATOR and DJ for the event to flow.
